Can you believe that it’s week four already! The highlight of week three was definitely all of our wonderful students securing their first qualification and all passed with flying colours first time round. They are now all officially Outdoor Emergency First Aiders – congratulations guys! Just 10 more assessments to go.
We had lots of fun this week with the students who spent a lot of time working on their skills in the hills, getting to go out on their first solo hill day without any instructors –even making it home in time for dinner! They have been practicing their rock climbing as well with a session outdoors at Chris’ Crag and lots of them have been heading down to our amazing indoor climbing wall in between dinner and evening activities to practice and apparently having a little fun posing for photographs! Looks like we might have some future Cotswold* Catalogue models in our midst! What do you think?

But, as I have already mentioned, this week’s main event was the first aid course which was lots of fun – especially when we got to do scenarios and let out our inner drama queens! The course covered lots of accidents and illnesses that our students could face as outdoor instructors, with the course culminating in a big mountain bike accident in the woods with one very unresponsive casualty and one very, very responsive casualty screaming at everyone in sight and flailing about on the ground with a suspected spinal injury! (Special shout out to Simon from our Nethybridge centre for acting up a storm for us!)

Our savvy students however stayed calm and did everything perfectly, making sure everyone was safe and comfortable, managing to get both casualties stable and off to hospital in less than 15 minutes! The first aid trainer had nothing but great things to say about our students during the course and I think he would be more than happy to have any of them help him if he was in an accident, although fingers crossed we never have to test that theory!
Next week our students will be heading off on a mountain expedition for a couple of days so here’s hoping they only get to practice their new navigational skills from this week but I will keep you posted!
Catch you next week!
